HOW TO UNLOCK A TEMPLATE

When in page view, you can open the .dwt by right clicking on page "Open Attached Template". Once open, make changes to your design. When you save the design, a dialogue box will appear asking you if you want to update pages. Normally the answer is yes.  If you want to continue to customize the template, you can wait until your are finished, then update the .htm pages.

Changes made will appear in ALL PAGES using that template. You can make changes in Dreamweaver alone, or, if you wish to open Fireworks to edit links, add your logo or perform many customization tasks.

When applying a template to a page of content your have developed, use the dropdown shown at the left "attach template to page". The command "open attached template" is what you would use to modify the locked areas of the template-- i.e. when you change the business name, phone number, or color schemes.

You may also locate the .dwt in the Templates folder and open it and make changes from there.

Why editable regions?

Editable regions allow someone not skilled in .html to update content and there is no risk of them accidentally deleting navigation or vital code, as those regions are locked.

A template has two types of regions: editable and locked (non-editable). Dreamweaver editable regions are the sections of a template that have changing content, such as a newsletter or home page newsletter.

Locked regions are the sections of a template that have static, unchanging   or rarely changed items such as a logo or a site navigation.

When you edit a template (a .dwt file), you can make changes to both the editable and locked regions. You can also create new editable regions, or lock editable regions. The editable and locked regions are highlighted in the template.

When you edit an. .htm page that has a template applied to it you can make changes to the editable regions only. The locked regions are highlighted, indicating that you cannot change these areas -- unless you unlock them.
